*Deverbal discourse markers: An overview*
Stefan Schneider (Graz)

Deverbal discourse markers, a subset of discourse markers, are
characterized by their great
number and variety. They derive from verbs or are based on verbs, that
is, they are constructions
diachronically or synchronically containing a (mostly inflected) verb
and one or more optional
elements. Like all discourse markers, their procedural meaning regards
the relationship between
utterances, between the addresser and his or her utterance or between
the addresser and the
addressee. Structurally, deverbal discourse markers are detached
constructions, which allows them
to appear in various positions within an utterance that are compatible
with their procedural
meaning. They occur in oral speech, with some also appearing in written
language.
Both regarding their synchrony and their diachrony, deverbal discourse
markers are well-
known, due to extensive research in the last decades. However, this long
research tradition has so
far not produced a widely accepted denomination. The various analytical
viewpoints from which
these elements have been studied have led to a host of different
denominations and definitions.
Probably the most well-known term is parenthetical verb, introduced by
Urmson (1952). During the
same decade, Benveniste (1966 [1958]) discusses a similar group of
elements under the heading
verbes d'opération. Andersen (2007) and Company Company (2008), both
from a pragmatic
perspective, use respectively marqueur discursif propositionnel and
deverbal discourse marker.
More recently, Schneider (2020, 2022, 2024) employs marqueur déverbal,
segnale discorsivo
deverbale and deverbal discourse marker. Lists of denominations can be
found in Dostie (2004),
Schneider (2007), Kaltenböck (2013), Ghezzi & Molinelli (2014) and Heine
& Kaltenböck (2021).
The presentation offers an overview of their semantic, pragmatic,
morphosyntactic and
phonological properties. The markers are examined using examples from
the Romance languages.
