algebra of programs”*

/Computer programs are subtle mathematical objects that can be viewed 
from many different angles. From one perspective, familiar to anyone who 
knows C or Java, programming is about driving a state machine (and maybe 
crashing it). There are, however, other perspectives on programs which 
afford natural connections to otherareas of mathematics. I will give an 
introduction to one such way of thinking about programs, called the 
sequent calculus, and show how this language can be modelled using 
linear algebra.///

about computation”*

/_Abstract:_/

/The first formal definition of an algorithm was given by Turing less 
than a century ago, and now most of us carry a universal Turing machine 
in our pockets. However, many basic aspects of computation remain 
puzzling. I will highlight two of these aspects. The first is the 
paradox of Maxwell's demon in thermodynamics, the resolution of which by 
Bennett has deep implications for computation. The second is Russell's 
paradox in logic; I will explain a new perspective which has inspired 
recent practical progress in the design of programming languages./
