*Hans Georg Feichtinger (Univ. Wien): „Anmerkungen zur Diskreten Fourier 
Transformation vomStandpunkt der Linearen Algebra?”*

Abstract:

Die diskrete Fourier Transformation DFT (in der Praxis realisiert mit 
Hilfe des sog. FFT Algorithmus, der schnellen Fourier Transformation) 
ist eine lineare (und bis auf Normalisierung unitäre) Transfor-mation 
des Cn, also ein Basis-Wechsel. Die wesentlichen Eigenschaften der DFT 
können also gut mit Methoden der linearen Algebra erklärt werden, und 
mit Hilfe von MATLAB (oder OCTAVE) auch numerisch gut realisiert werden. 
Die entsprechenden Details sollen bei dieser Gelegenheit illustriert 
werden.**

*Hans Georg Feichtinger (Univ. Wien): „45 Years of Fourier Analysis in 
Vienna: Changes during an Academic Life Time“*

Abstract/:/

In this colloqium talk the speaker will report about his experiences 
with Fourier Analysis and Harmonic Analysis, starting from his first 
course (on classical Fourier Series, in 1970, with L. Schmetterer), via 
the period of Harmonic Analysis over Locally Compact Groups (under his 
advisor Hans Reiter [1921-1992]) up to the modern Time-Frequency and 
Gabor Analysis, which is playing a dominant role within the scientific 
work performed in the NuHAG group. The combination of function spaces, 
numerical harmonic analysis and real world applications has lead to the 
ideas concerning “Conceptual Harmonic Analysis”. Compared to the usual 
approach using tempered distributions only normed vector spaces are used 
for this approach. It provides a simplified theory of generalized 
functions, suitable for both abstract harmonic analysis as well as for 
many engineering applications. The corresponding general ideas, making 
use of so-called Banach Gelfand Triples, will be explained.
