*Christoph Schweigert (Univ. Hamburg): „Was sind Kategorien, wie zählt 
man sie und warum zählt man sie? **What are categories, how do you count 
them and why?”*

Abstract:

Die Sprache der Kategorien wird in den verschiedensten Gebieten der 
Mathematik und von verschie-denen Anwendern von Mathematik benutzt. Wir 
führen einige elementare Begriffe ein und erklären dann den Begriff der 
Gruppoid-Kardinalität, bei dem ein Objekt mit dem Inversen der Ordnung

seinerAutomorphismengruppe gewichtet wird. Wenn möglich erklären wir 
dann, wie dieser Begriff benutzt werden kann, um Invarianten von 
Mannigfaltigkeiten zu definieren.

Categories are a pervasive language in mathematics (and beyond). We 
motivate some basic notions and then introduce the notion of a groupoid 
cardinality which amounts to weight an object by the inverse of the 
order of its automorphism group. If time allows, we sketch why this can 
be used to

define invariants of manifolds.

*Karol Mikula (Slov. Univ. of. Technology): „Mathematical models and 
numerical methods for early embryogenesis computational reconstruction“*

Abstract/:/

In the talk we present mathematical models and numerical methods which 
lead to vertebrate early embryogenesis reconstruction and extraction of 
the cell trajectories and the cell lineage tree from large-scale 3D+time 
microscopy image sequences. Robust and efficient numerical schemes for

solving nonlinear PDEs related to filtering, object detection, 
segmentation and tracking in 3D and 4D images were designed, 
parallelized for massively parallel computer clusters and applied to the 
above mentioned fundamental tasks of developmental biology. The 
presented results were obtained in

cooperation of groups at Slovak University of Technology, Bratislava, 
CNRS, Gif-sur-Yvette, Ecole Polytechnique, Paris and University of Bologna.

theory and its interpretation in topological field theory “*

Abstract:

Topological field theories – despite their name and their applications 
in physics – constitute a rigorous piece of mathematics, with deep links 
to lowdimensional topology (in particular to invariants of knots and 
threemanifolds) and to representation theory. We explain that 
generalizations of topological field theory that include three-manifolds 
with boundaries and with embedded surfaces as well allow to „explain“ 
structures of independent interest in representation theory.
