We discuss the regularity and symmetry properties of two-dimensional 
periodic water waves traveling at constant speed over a flat horizontal 
bed when gravity is the sole restoring force. The situation considered 
is that of rotational waves possessing a general vorticity function, but 
we exclude the presence of stagnation points, that is fluid particles 
that travel horizontally with the same speed as the wave.

Requiring merely integrability of the vorticity function, we first show 
that the streamlines of such waves are real-analytic graphs. 
Particularly, the wave profile itself enjoys this strong regularity 
property. This result enables us prove that the symmetric waves with one 
crest and trough per period are characterized, within the set of all 
traveling periodic gravity waves, by the property that all the 
streamlines have a global minimum on the same vertical line. (joint
