Mathematisches Kolloquium – Einladung zu einem Vortrag im Rahmen der 
Habilitation von Dr. Bernhard Krön (Universität Wien, Fakultät für 
Mathematik)
„Structure trees and applications“

Abstract:
We discuss classical and recent applications of structure tree theory 
and open problems in this context in graph theory and group theory.
Graphs can be decomposed into blocks which correspond to the vertices of 
a tree such that the set of these blocks is invariant under the action 
of the group of graph auto-morphisms. Groups which act on the graph will 
then also act on the tree. Applying Bass-Serre Theory we get for 
instance a proof of Stallings' Theorem on groups with more than one end. 
Considering structural graph theoretic questions, this auto-morphism 
invariant tree decomposition has the advantage that it is canonic in the 
sense that it does not depend on the choice of a root for the 
construction. Recent graph theoretic applications are Tutte's tree 
decomposition for graphs with arbitrary high connectivity and 
classifications of graphs with certain symmetry conditions.
