„Introduction to homology and persistence“
Prof. Herbert Edelsbrunner (IST Austria, Duke University)

Abstract: We review homology groups, some of their properties, and the 
classic Smith normal form algorithm for computing them. This material is 
traditionally part of algebraic topology and described in many 
textbooks, including Munkres: ``Elements of Algebraic Topology''. 
Persistent homology is a recent extension of homology theory and arises 
when one considers a nested sequence of spaces. Going from left to right 
in the sequence, the space increases and changes its homology groups. 
The elementary changes are the birth of a new class (or rather a new 
generator) and the death of a class (or generator). The main idea of 
persistence is the existence of a canonical pairing between births and 
deaths. Using this pairing, we can measure how long a homology class 
lives. This measurement has many ramifications.
