Title & abstract:
Composing with clauses, from the perspective of Turkish
This talk is about the syntax and semantics of clauses when they are
part of bigger structures, like when they combine with nouns, verbs and
adjectives (e.g., 'the thought that it's raining in Vienna,' or 'Paul
thinks/is sure that it's raining Vienna').
How best to analyze these structures is an old and difficult question,
which is still being raised and addressed today. And that is what we
will do, but from the perspective of Turkish.
I will describe the different strategies that the language employs to
combine clauses with surrounding material, suggest a way of deriving the
resulting structures compositionally, and lay out the challenges that we
encounter along the way.
