This change in mind might also be connected to me getting in contact 
with Gerry Haskins right after your first message. In the meantime, he 
confirmed that for Sun Services it is irrelevant whether the patch was 
applied via 'patchadd' or one of the patch automation tool wrappers to 
'patchadd' (like pca, smpatch, Update Manager, TLP, UCE, and Ops Center).

It will be ensured that "confused" support engineers are educated about 
this policy.
