I think someone is missing the point of the Oracle acquisition. Really
there *should* be a basic support fee. Anyone can download the update
releases ( like Solaris 10 update 9 any time real soon now ) but basic
support *should* cost money or the organization that provides that support
suffers. Certainly I would like to see money flowing back into Silicon
Valley and into the hands of engineers that work on Solaris. Really, to
me, that is what this is about.

If security patches and other critical updates ( like ISC Bind/Apache/SSH
etc ) are provided for free then that is a wonderful *service* that Oracle
is providing. Freely. However everything else should have at least some
basic fee. Even a small fee is a good thing for the engineers involved.

This is the case with Red Hat, Ubuntu and almost anything viable.
