pca -d will download the patches to your patchdir as .zip files, just like
if you had d/l's them from Sun manually.

You can use any valid patch method to install the patches, I use pca -i, I
have a customer who uses pca to list and d/l the patches, but he likes to
install them manually.

I'm not sure what you mean in #2 about local files and the EMC?

I think, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, that pca will download even
obsolete patches if you tell it to.

As far as applying patches later, ZFS root and Live Upgrade.  That's the way
to go.  With ZFS root, lucreate uses snapshots to create the new boot
environment and it takes about a minute.

generally I do:

lucreate -n <be name>
lumount <bename> /a
pca -i <pca options> missing -R /a
luumount <bename>
luactivate <bename>

Then I can let the system sit until I'm ready to activate the new boot
environment

init 6

If I don't like the results...

luactivate <old bename>
init 6

Voila, no more staying up all night patching and recovering from bad
patches...
