Not you: the patch README is missing something. It says you need to
reboot to activate the changes, not that you need to apply it in
single-user mode, or to reboot *immediately*.

*Some* patches require single-user mode. Not all of them. I would be a
fool if I switched to single-user every time I want to update gtar or a
system header, and kept giving money to a company that wouldn't support
that.
Beside, the preferred way is now to use Live Upgrade to patch.
