The encounter of the Mughal Empire and the Portuguese sea borne empire 
can be considered as a remarkable juncture of civilizational encounter 
in early modern India. 'Service of God and own profit' was the guiding 
factor for the Portuguese in their overseas trading missions. But how 
does one assess the Mughal approach towards the Portuguese? Tracing 
connections between Mughal-Portuguese (economic and political) 
interaction on the ports or trading fronts with the Jesuit missions and 
(religious) developments in the Mughal court, carves out a picture of 
multi layered relations between the two powers.
