[DissKoll] DissKoll, 5th Anniversary

Dear visitors of the DissKoll (Dissertantenkolloquium),

Tomorrow, January 11, 2010, the DissKoll will have its last talk in fall
2009/10 and will celebrate its 5th anniversary. Therefore, we will start out
with a little introduction about the history of the DissKoll that will be
followed by a talk by Alexander Bihlo (University of Vienna) about "*Structure
preserving finite-mode models*".

*Structure preserving finite-mode models*

Abstract:
A typical problem with the conventional Galerkin approach for the
construction of finite-mode models is to keep structural properties
untouched in the process of discretization. We present the relevant
mathematical structures (e.g. Hamiltonian formulation) of selected equations
of fluid mechanics and describe how they behave under transition from an
infinite-dimensional phase space to a finite-dimensional one. Selected
finite-mode models preserving these structures are reviewed and their
potential usefullness is discussed.
