holo.research -- A list for practitioners in Holotropic Breathwork for updates, discussions, and coordination to advance research

About holo.research

holo.research is a mailing list dedicated to advancing scientific research on the mechanisms (how it works) and effects (what it does) of Holotropic Breathwork in the Grof Transpersonal Training (GTT) protocol. Recognized as the “gold standard” for somatically induced non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSC), Holotropic Breathwork has been practiced for over 40 years by thousands of individuals, yet remains largely unexplored in scientific research. This list serves as a collaborative space for practitioners with a scientific background to exchange updates, discuss methodologies, and coordinate research efforts—filling a crucial gap at a time of renewed interest in altered states within the Psychedelic Renaissance.

To maintain a focused and productive discussion environment, please follow these guidelines:

0. Please use your clear name for registration and sign off for your messages!

1. Research-Oriented Content Only

This mailing list is dedicated to scientific research on Holotropic Breathwork in the GTT protocol and, where relevant, the experimental formats of GLT. Discussions should be research-related and may include:
- Scientific questions, ideas, and discussions
- Updates on research projects and publications
- Information about conferences and academic events
- Methodological discussions on studying non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSC)

2. No Workshop Announcements

This list is not for workshop promotions, advertisements, or event listings. If you are looking for general community exchange, please subscribe to holo.general@lists.univie.ac.at

3. Interdisciplinary, Scientific Approach

We welcome contributions from various academic disciplines, including psychology, neuroscience, medicine, anthropology, philosophy and others. However, posts should maintain a scientific, evidence-based perspective.

4. Strictly Focused on GTT (and Experimental GLT)

- Discussions on other breathwork modalities (e.g., Wim Hof, Rebirthing, Pranayama) are off-topic.
- Comparative discussions with psychedelic substances should remain research-oriented and not veer into personal experience sharing.

5. Respectful and Constructive Exchange

- Keep discussions professional, respectful, and constructive.
- When critiquing ideas, stay academic and evidence-based, not personal.

6. Moderation & Compliance

- First-time posts will be held for moderation to prevent spam and off-topic discussions.
- Persistent off-topic posting may lead to moderation or removal.

We appreciate your contributions to advancing the scientific understanding of Holotropic Breathwork. Let’s build a valuable resource together!

Keep on breathing,
Peter Rantaša, Coordinator
