          occurs at many levels of
          biological organization and explaining its origin and
          maintenance is one of the
          defining problems of evolutionary biology.  Most prominently,
          phenotypic
          variation is visible in the differences that allow us to group
          individuals into
          species. However, phenotypic variation is also ubiquitous
          within species where
          it can be caused by alternative genetic variants or by a
          heterogeneous environment.
          In a sense, phenotypic variation also exists within
          individuals. For instance,
          the vast majority of multicellular organisms are composed of
          cells of different
          types. More generally, most organisms show a modular structure
          also at levels
          below and above the cell and in many cases modules are
          differentiated so as to
          be specialized to execute different tasks. In my habilitations
          treatise I
          analyzed mathematical models that deal with the evolution of
          phenotypic
          variation among individuals within populations and among
          modules within
          organisms. I thereby consider both the emergence of phenotypic
          variation due to
          genetic variation and due to environmental variation. The
          focus lies on the
          conditions that result in the emergence and maintenance of
          phenotypic variation
          as an adaptive response to natural selection as opposed to
          variation due to
          neutral processes.<o:p></o:p></span></i></p>
