play
a fundamental role in many branches of mathematics and computer
science. Since
polynomials share many properties with the integers, nice
statements about them
also appear in number theory. Such aspects are the topic of this
talk. A simple
and well-known fact for example is that Fermat's Last Theorem
holds if we ask
for solutions in polynomials instead of integers. This follows
at once from the
so-called ABC-theorem, a statement whose analogue for integers
is one of the
most important open conjectures in number theory with many far
reaching
consequences. In the talk we shall discuss this theorem and its
connections to
the classical ABC-conjecture and we shall look at some selected
applications in
Diophantine geometry, whose analogues in the integers are open
or have only an
insufficient answer so far, and at some applications to problems
on composite
rational functions expressible with few terms, which don't have
an analogue in

approaches the topic from a completely
elementary point of view; all that is required to follow it is
the most basic
notion of the homology of a topological space. The constructions
are motivated
by pictures. Although the subject matter is algebraic topology,
there is an
intriguinganalogy with free resolutions in algebra. The talk is
