*Thomas Schuster (Univ. **Saarland): „Tomographic problems in 
inhomogeneous media“*

**

_Abstract: _Tomographic problems deal with the determination of a 
quantity (e.g. absorption or refractive index) of a medium from the 
measurement of transmitted, reflected or scattered waves. The 
investi-gation of tomographic problems in media with variable sound 
speed, resp. refractive index, is a lively and challenging research 
field in imaging. Sometimes the assumption of a constant sound speed 
such as in vector field tomography or in thermoacoustic tomography, 
leads to unavoidable reconstruction errors. But a variable sound speed 
changes the properties of the underlying mathematical model 
dramatically. Moreover physical phenomena such as refractions occur, 
that can not be neglected. The talk addresses two tomographic problems 
which take variable sound speed into account. First we deal with the 
problem of computing the refractive index from time-offlight 
measurements. This inverse problem is also important in vector field 
tomography or in seismics. In this case, we can no longer assume that 
the ultrasound signal travels along straight lines. Moreover we use 
geodesic curves of a certain Riemannian metric connected to the 
refractive index as propagation paths. We present properties of the 
forward problem and a numerical solution scheme for the inverse problem 
which relies on a steepest descent method. The second application 
considers the application of the Algebraic Reconstruction Technique 
(ART) in tera- hertz tomography. We modify this method by taking Snell's 
law and the reflection losses due to the Fresnel equations into account. 
As a result we obtain a significant increase in reconstruction accuracy.

Codes lernen?“*

**

_Abstract:_Binäre fehlerkorrigierende Codes scheinen etwas ganz 
einfaches zu sein: Es sind Unter-räume von Z/2n, kommen also im 
täglichen Leben des Mathematikers dauernd vor. So auch in der Topologie, 
wo man Räumen gewisse Vektorräume zuordnet, z.B. Äquivalenzklassen von 
Wegen mit

gleichem Anfangs - und Endpunkt, wo zwei Wege äquivalent heißen, wenn 
man dazwischen eine Fläche einspannen kann. Dies ist der einzige aus der 
Topologie kommende Vektorraum, den man für diesen Vortrag braucht. Indem 
man gewisse Wege in Mannigfaltigkeiten geometrisch auszeichnet

entstehen Codes. Die so gewonnenen Codes sind sehr speziell, was aus 
einer fundamentalen Eigenschaft von Mannigfaltigkeiten folgt: Dualität. 
Es wird darüber berichtet, welche Codes auf diese Weise entstehen und 
was man über Codes aus dieser Verbindung lernen kann**
