**/Abstract: Crystals constitute a prominent state of matter. Their 
geometries and beauty have fascinated mankind since its early ages. Ever 
since, the specific mechanical and electromagnetic properties of 
crystalline aggregates have been at the basis of crucial technologies 
including optics, metallurgy, and electronics. Correspondingly, the 
understanding of crystal formation has been subject of constant 
attention over the centuries./

/From the mathematical standpoint however, crystallization phenomena are 
to a large extent still eluding rigorous treatment. By restricting to 
ideal, zero-temperature situations, one resorts to consider suitable 
classes of particle-interaction functionals. Crystallization then 
corresponds to prove the periodicity of the minimizers of such 
functionals. In some distinguished cases, this variational perspective 
can shed light on the global geometry and the mechanics of crystalline 
solids. I will review some classical results on crystallization, 
highlight recent advances, and comment on the many open questions. /
