*"Asymptotic and probabilistic analysis of minimal redundant digit 
expansions"*

/_Abstract:_/

We study digit expansions which allow an efficient computation of scalar 
multiplications in abelian groups such as the point group of
  an elliptic curve. Choosing larger digit sets leads to fewer expensive 
curve operations at the cost of additional precomputation effort.
  Apart from binary expansions we also study expansions with imaginary 
quadratic bases which act on the curve as the Frobenius
endomorphism. The number of group additions corresponds to the weight of 
the digit expansion, i.e., the number of non-zero digits.
Under suitable probabilistic models, we analyse the weight of a random 
digit expansion. We show that asymptotically, the weight is
normally distributed.
