with and without overlap"*

/_Abstract:_///

/A sphere packing in the classical sense is an arrangement of 
non-overlapping spheres within a containing space. I will first review 
some of the most important results regarding finding the densest 
non-overlapping packing of equal spheres. We will then briefly touch on 
applications of this theory to coding theory. Finally, we will broaden 
the definition of a sphere packing to a minimal overlap configuration of 
spheres, and I will present an algorithm based on convex optimization to 
find such configurations. I will end the talk with open problems 
regarding sphere packings, which are at the interface of optimization 
and geometry/.//
