Abstract: One of the most basic spaces in mathematics is the quotient space
of the upper half-plane H by the modular group SL(2, Z). It is a locally 
symmetric space and is also the moduli space of Riemann Surfaces of genus 1.

The quotient space H/SL(2, Z) admits two important generalizations. The 
first generalization consists of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces of 
noncompact
type, and the second generalization consists of moduli spaces of Riemann 
surfaces
of genus greater than or equal to 2.

In this talk, I will discuss some analogies and interplays between 
between these two classes of spaces from the perspective of analysis and 
geometry.
