Prof. Parusinksi (Université de Nice): “Determining qualitative 
properties of trajectories of real analytic vector fields”

Abstract: We discuss on examples how the classical methods of theory of 
singularities, resolution of singularities, stratifications, 
characteristic exponents, can be used to study the geometric properties 
of trajectories of real analytic vector fields.  These trajectories, the 
solutions of systems of ordinary differential equations with real 
analytic (or simply polynomial) coefficients, are in general 
transcendental. Therefore, their qualitative behavior, such as stability 
or "non-oscillation" at the limit points, is difficult to determine 
directly by the analytic geometry methods.  The examples will include 
the non-oscillation of the trajectories of gradient vector fields 
(GradientConjecture of R. Thom, solved in 2000).  We also state some 
open problems.
