Mathematisches Kolloquium – Einladung zu einem Vortrag im Rahmen der 
Habilitation von Dr. Kristan Schneider  (Universität Wien, Fakultät für 
Mathematik)
„Maximization Principles in Models of Frequency-Dependent Selection“
Abstract: After a brief introduction into the fascinating research area 
of population genetics, we will draw our attention to models of 
frequency-dependent selection. This form of selection occurs if the 
fitness (‘probability than an offspring survives until the age of 
reproduction’) of a particular phenotype depends on the frequency of its 
own and other phenotypes in the population. In particular, we focus on a 
model to which we refer as the Wildcard Model. It subsumes various 
models with very different biological interpretations as special cases.  
In discrete and continuous time we establish maximization principles for 
the Wildcard Model that can be considered as generalizations of Fisher’s 
Fundamental Theorem of Natural Selection, which was generally believed 
not to hold under frequency-dependent selection. Moreover, we highlight 
some applications of the Wildcard Model to particular models, and, 
especially, to long-term evolution.
