“On the dynamics of the Lynes recurrences”

Abstract:

The Lyness recurrence, xn+2 = (a + xn+1)=xn; has been extensively 
studied during these last years and it is now almost completely 
understood in its main features. We present an overview of the known 
results together with some results that we have recently obtained. More 
concretely we face the following two questions:
● When a; x0 and x1 are rational numbers, which are the possible periods 
for the periodic sequences generated by the recurrence? We solve this 
question, and as a consequence, a conjecture of Zeeman about the 
non-existence of 9-periodic rational recurrences for this recurrence.
● Are there di_erent behaviors when one studies the non-autonomous 
Lyness recurrence xn+2 = (an + xn+1)=xn; where fang is a m-periodic 
sequence?
