Background<br>
Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's institutions.<br>
<br>
Eligibility<br>
Candidates who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the following eight institutions, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience, and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.<br>
City University of Hong Kong<br>
Hong Kong Baptist University<br>
Lingnan University<br>
The Chinese University of Hong Kong<br>
The Hong Kong Institute of Education<br>
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University<br>
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology<br>

Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.<br>
<br>
Fellowship Award<br>
The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (approximately US$2,600) and a conference and research related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year to each awardee for a period of three years. About 135 PhD Fellowships will
be awarded in each academic year*. For awardees who need more than three years to complete their PhD studies, additional support may be provided by the chosen institutions. For details, please contact the institutions concerned directly.<br>

* Institutions in Hong Kong normally start their academic year in September.<br>

Selection Panel<br>
Shortlisted applications, subject to their areas of studies, will be reviewed by one of the following two Selection Panels comprising experts in the relevant board areas:<br>
sciences, medicine, engineering and technology<br>
humanities, social sciences and business studies<br>

Selection Criteria<br>
While candidates' academic excellence is the primary consideration, the Selection Panels will take into account factors as follows:<br>
Academic excellence;<br>
Research ability and potential;<br>
Communication and interpersonal skills; and<br>
Leadership abilities.<br>

Regulations<br>
The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL) has agreed to offer scholarships to its visiting research degree students by making use of the funding available in the Departmental Non-UGC Reserves, with effect from the 2011-2012 academic year
under the following regulations:<br>
<br>
1 The Scholarships shall be known as the “CTL Scholarship for Visiting Research Degree Students”.<br>
<br>
2 The Scholarships shall be offered to visiting research degree students from institutions outside Hong Kong to conduct research or undertake part of their research studies at the department.
<br>
<br>
3 The scholarship will cover the following items for a maximum period of 6 months:<br>
<br>
(a) a subsistence allowance of HK$5,000 per month; <br>
(b) an accommodation allowance of $2,000 per month; and<br>
(c) research component fee of $1,170 per month (to be charged by the University)<br>
<br>
If the visiting period is not on a full month basis, pro-rata funding will be provided for items (a) and (b).
<br>
<br>
4 There shall be a total of 25 awards available. The award (excluding research component fee which will be credited into the University account direct) will be released to the student’s account monthly, subject to satisfactory study process as confirmed
by research supervisor.<br>
<br>
5 Notwithstanding item 3(c), students who undertake taught courses during their visiting period at CityU will still be required to pay additional fees calculated on a credit unit basis.<br>
<br>
6 The above financial support is granted based on academic merit, provided that visiting research students are not being financed by other organizations/parties covering their accommodation, tuition fees or living expenses.
<br>
<br>
7 As a condition of their financial support, students will be required to submit a report on their visit to CityU, highlighting, in particular, academic exchange activities in which they have participated.<br>
<br>
8 Students can indicate their interest in applying for the above award in the application form for admission as visiting research students.<br>
