Liebe SinoNet-Mitglieder,
hiermit möchten wir Sie zu folgendem Gastvortrag einladen:
Prof. Dr. Shu-min Chung, Director of the Institute of Taiwan History, Academia Sinica
Layered Colonial Legacies in Taiwan: Shaping and Contes7ng Memories in Films and Historical Sites
Abstract:
In 1895, Taiwan was ceded by the Qing Empire to Japan. In 1945, following Japan’s defeat in World War Two, the Chinese government—on behalf of the Allied forces—took control of Taiwan. Japan formally renounced its sovereignty over the island, and the Republic of China government assumed effective rule. Over successive generations, people in Taiwan were taught to identify first as Japanese, and later as Chinese. It was not until the 1990s that identifying as Taiwanese truly emerged as a viable option. As a result, different generations in Taiwan have developed overlapping—and often conflicting—historical understandings and identities. This lecture focuses on two films that have sparked significant attention and controversy in Taiwan. The first is the documentary Wansei Back Home (灣生回家, 2015), which explores the ties between Taiwan and Japanese individuals who lived there during the colonial period. The second is Listening to the Sea (聽海湧, 2024), which tells the story of Taiwanese individuals who served as guards in prisoner-of-war camps in Borneo during World War Two, and were later prosecuted as war criminals. By examining these two works, the lecture explores why they have provoked such intense debate—revealing the complex and contested nature of national identity, as well as deep social divisions shaped by differing historical narratives. Finally, the lecture considers how historical memory is shaped and contested, through examples such as the destruction and reuse of historic sites in Taiwan—raising questions about how the past is interpreted, and sometimes manipulated, in the present.
