*Workshop Circular Economy in China and Europe*

The Workshop is part of the research project Re-Sourcing in China: 
Standards for Circular Economy - Comparing China and the EU. This 
project involves analysts from the University of Vienna, the University 
of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, and the International 
College, Suzhou Research Institute, Renmin University of China.

The main objectives of this workshop are (1) to discuss results obtained 
within the project Re-Sourcing in China up to now (2) to collect the 
input and suggestions for further analysis  (3) to discuss coming 
possibilities of research.

There are participants of Re-Sourcing in China as well as external 
experts invited to talk.


*On the project*

The current developments with all time high prices for some commodities 
like copper underpin the relevance of the ongoing project at the 
Department of East Asian Studies: "Re-Sourcing in China: Standards for 
Circular Economy - Comparing China and the EU". "Circular economy" has 
developed to an important economic, ecological and political issue in 
China because of relative scarcity of raw materials and problems with 
waste management and emissions. The perspective is a cascade of repeated 
uses of substances.  Similar approaches like "recycling economy" in the 
EU or "3R" (reducing, reusing, and recycling resources) in Japan are 
analyzed and compared. Recent Pilot Projects in Circular Economy in 
China are evaluated. The emphasis is on the measurement of progress in 
an comparative view: Central is the performance of resource productivity 
and driving forces; compilation and discussion of data and indicators of 
circular economy in China in comparison with EU-countries. The focus is 
on the meso level (region, branch, industrial parks). Results will be: 
identifying comparative good practise and potentials of synergies and 
improving resource productivity. Methodologically cultural, social and 
natural sciences are integrated. The special feature is intimate 
knowledge of Chinese characteristics, cultural and historic specific 
conditions. E.g. Circular economy in China can look back on a long 
tradition leading back to the pre-modern era.
