Parental engagement and multilingualism: analyzing identity
constructions

Parental engagement is considered a multidimensional construct,
understood to be a key factor to support students in their
learning processes, and, therefore, associated with pupils’ good
performance in school. However, for multilingual families with a
migration history, parental engagement can pose unique challenges.
Drawing on Norton’s (2013) concept of investment and a notion of
identity that considers its intersection with capital and ideology
(Darvin & Norton, 2015), in this dissertation assumes that if
social practices are perceived as exclusionary, they may affect
how multilingual parents negotiate their identity within society,
their perceived right to speak within the school community, and
their possibilities of parental engagement. The goal of this study
is to understand how multilingual parents construct their identity
in the context of parental engagement, taking into consideration
how capital and ideological aspects are intertwined in this
process. In this presentation, a special focus for the discussion
will be given to the theoretical framework as well as some
emerging findings.
