This two-day online event brings together experts on English as a lingua franca (ELF), inter-/transcultural communication, sociolinguistics and multilingualism to explore research perspectives that the theoretical and empirical engagement with communication

 in transient contexts has for applied linguistics. The aim of the symposium is to critically reflect on current concepts, methods and research practices in (applied) linguistics and to identify future perspectives for applied linguistic research that emerge

 in light of the lingua-cultural diversity and fleetingness of many international, local and virtual communicative settings. Being linked to ongoing research on ELF in Transient International Groups (TIGs) in the #ELFinTIGs project, the symposium takes ELF

 communication as a case in point, but explicitly welcomes the exploration and discussion of theoretical and methodological implications that go beyond the study of ELF communication. It invites connections with other *languages and different multilingual and

 transient communicative situations.

<p>The symposium is designed to include keynote talks as well as longer periods of interaction with participants. Its aim is to provide a forum for academic discussion. The issues raised and discussed during the symposium are expected to be of relevance for

 research on spoken interaction, transient and/or multilingual groups and applied linguistics more generally.</p>
