<p><strong><font size="+1">Zur langfristigen Sicherung des Fachs
Latein an der Universität Salzburg und zur Fortführung des
CSEL</font> <br>

<p>Das Rektorat der Universität Salzburg plant, die <strong>einzige
vollwertige Professur für Latein</strong> am Fachbereich
Altertumswissenschaften nicht nachzubesetzen. Das würde zwar nicht
bedeuten, dass das Studienfach Latein eingestellt wird, dennoch
gibt es gewichtige Argumente für die Nachbesetzung:</p>
<ul>
<li>Nur eine starke Latinistik mit forschungsgeleiteter Lehre –
und dafür ist eine vollwertige Professur von essentieller
Bedeutung – wird imstande sein, Studierende zu begeistern und
den Bedarf an Lateinlehrern auch langfristig zu decken.</li>
<li>Ein Verzicht auf die Professur wird nicht nur dem Fach selbst,
sondern auch den anderen altertumswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen
an der Universität schaden.</li>
<li>Latein als eine der Grundlagen der europäischen
Geistesgeschichte ist gerade für die Universität Salzburg mit
ihren bekannten Stärken in Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften
sowie in der Theologie unverzichtbar.</li>
<li>Nur mit einer Professur ist die Fortsetzung des Projekts
Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum, das seit 1866 in
der weltweit renommierten Reihe CSEL kritische Editionen der
lateinischen Patristik herausgibt, gesichert. </li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Wir fordern daher das Rektorat, den Senat sowie den
Universitätsrat der Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg auf, die
Nachbesetzung der Professur für Latein in den Entwicklungsplan
für die Jahre 2022–2027 aufzunehmen. </strong></p>

<p>The Rectorate of the University of Salzburg plans not to fill the
<strong>only existing full professorship for Latin</strong> at the
Department of Classical Studies following the retirement of the
current position holder. This does not mean that the Latin program
would be discontinued. Nevertheless, there are solid arguments for
preserving the professorship:</p>
<ul>
<li>Only a strong Latin department with research-oriented teaching
– for which a full professorship is essential – will be able to
inspire students and meet the demand for Latin teachers in the
long term.</li>
<li>Discontinuing the professorship will not only do harm to the
field of study itself, but also to the other disciplines of
Classical Studies within the University.</li>
<li>As one of the central building blocks of European intellectual
history, Latin is indispensable, especially for the University
of Salzburg, which is well-known for its strengths in the
humanities, cultural studies and theology.</li>
<li>Only the professorship will ensure the continuation of the
project <em>Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum</em>,
which has been publishing critical editions of Latin patristics
in the world-renowned CSEL series since 1866.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>We therefore call upon the Rectorate, the Senate and the
University Council of the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg to
include the professorship for Latin in the development plan for
the years 2022-2027.<br>
