Hayu exhibits scale effects in agreement, but the pattern is more complex than the examples of scale effects usually discussed in the literature: In Hayu, the agreement controller is determined by a person and by a number scale. In cases of comflicting prefences, these scales are ranked such that the person scale outranks the number scale. Moreover, this general person over number preference is reversed in one context. This pattern poses a challenge to existing analyses of scale-driven agreement. I propose a Harmonic Grammar-based analysis where an argument’s prominence on scales is quantified and expressed in a harmony score. The agreement rule of Hayu is then very simple: The verb agrees with the argument that has the highest harmony score. In this way, the agreement controller can be determined correctly for all contexts. The apparent exception where the numer scale seems to outrank the person scale (reversing the general person preference) falls out automatically as a cumulative effect. I will also compare this approach to an optimality-theroetic implementation.<br class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><div class="">
