You can learn more about the Oxford Bibliographies at: <a href="http://www.oxfordbibliographies.com/" class="">http://www.oxfordbibliographies.com/</a>.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">The Oxford Bibliographies in Linguistics can be accessed for free through the university library catalogue. </div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Of the well-studied languages, subtraction is particularly pertinent in Slavic and Romance. In the literature, it has also been claimed that some German dialects use subtraction for the expression of nominal plural; and in English, some hypocoristic nouns have been seen as formed by subtractive truncation. Recently, subtraction has been discussed in relation to featural affixation, too. However, the featural affixation approach developed in Leipzig is applicable only to selected examples and cannot explain why subtractive morphology often deletes more than a single phoneme. All these issues are addressed in the introductions to the different sections of the bibliography. </div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Of the Vienna linguists, Wolfgang U.
