<!--StartFragment--><p class="MsoNormal">Dear colleagues,</p><p class="MsoNormal">I am delighted to let you know that the 2017 Graduate
Student Award of the Slavic Linguistics Society (SLS) goes to the Middle
European Interdisciplinary Master Program in Cognitive Science at the University of Vienna. The MEi:CogSci student Dušan
Ptáček won the prize for the paper <i class="">Second-grade
diminutives in Czech and Slovak: A contrastive study with data from corpora</i>,
joint research with S. Manova (Vienna) and R. Gregová (Ko<span lang="RU" class="">š</span><span lang="DE" class="">ice)</span>.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The SLS is the international organization of Slavic Linguists and the award is highly competitive. The Chair of the
SLS Board, Prof. Joseph Schallert (University of
Toronto), and the SLS treasurer, Prof. Catherine Rudin (Wayne State
College), congratulated Dušan last week.</p><p class="MsoNormal">We are especially happy because this is the second time a
MEi:CogSci student wins the prize. In 2015, another student received the award
for psycholinguistic research on Polish word-formation. In 2016, we did not apply. The MEi:CogSci is a relatively new program, we are not related to any Slavic department (actually, the Slavic Department of the University of Vienna has never won the SLS graduate student award). The two SLS prizes clearly show the advantages of an interdisciplinary and research-oriented education such as that provided in the MEi:CogSci and are
recognition of the world-leading research carried out
