The School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences at Örebro University is currently offering doctoral study opportunities within Media and Communication Studies as part of the initiative "Successful Ageing". The start date of the programme is 1 September
2016.</p>

The doctoral study initiative "Successful Ageing" is a central component of a cross-faculty research theme in which the ageing part of our population is viewed as a resource rather than a problem. The goal is to develop a better understanding of what "successful
ageing" is or could be, focusing on its components and underlying mechanisms, as well as on the design of concrete methods, innovations, products, etcetera, that will support successful ageing from an individual, organisational and social perspective. This
is important, not only for the well-being of the elderly themselves, but also for the future development of a society for all.</p>

Media and Communication Studies at Örebro University is a thriving research environment of recognised international and global standing. It houses peer-reviewed international publications such as
<i class="">Journal of Language and Politics </i>or <i class="">Social Semiotics</i>, as well as the book series
<i class="">Bloomsbury Advances in Critical Discourse Studies</i>. Media and Communication Studies at Örebro is one of the world’s leading centres in critical studies of media discourse, political and organisational communication, broadcast talk as well as
of social/online and traditional media.</p>

The current position will be attached to the research group Discourse and Communication Studies, where scholars specialise in such areas as critical discourse studies, analysis of broadcast talk and media language, and studies of organisational communication
and public relations. However, the applicants should also be able to contribute to work conducted in our other teams, more specifically the Media and Journalism Studies group which focuses on media theory and analysis, traditional and new/social media as well
as on journalism, and the group Visual Communication and Film Studies which works on various aspects of visual communication and on critical approaches to film and visual culture.</p>

The proposed doctoral project should be empirically driven and should fall within the field of, broadly understood, critical studies of discourse. The proposed project should focus on such issues as mediated expertise, media use by the elderly, and/or mediatisation
of and discourses about ageing. It should aim at answering questions about the role of the media in mediatisation and discursive construction of successful ageing and elderly wellbeing.</p>

The successful candidate is expected to be able to communicate scientific results in English, both in speech and in writing.</p>

The successful candidate is offered a place on the doctoral programme concluding with the Degree of Doctor. The position is offered as a full-time doctoral studentship for the duration of the programme (4 years). The initial salary for a doctoral studentship
is 25,300 SEK per month.</p>

Entry requirements and selection</h2>

For admission to doctoral studies, applicants are required to meet general and specific entry requirements. In addition, they shall be considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the programme. For a full account of the entry requirements,
refer to the admissions regulations as well as to annex 2 to the general syllabus for the subject.</p>

Applicants meet the general entry requirements for doctoral studies if they:</p>

have been awarded a qualification at the Master's level, or</p>

have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits (four years) of which at least 60 credits (one year) were awarded at the Master's level, or</p>

Specific entry requirements</h3>

A person meets the specific entry requirements* for doctoral studies in the subject if he or she has received a passing grade in courses of at least 120 credits, including an independent project on both the advanced course level and on the second cycle, in
media and communication studies. Applicants who have acquired substantially corresponding knowledge, in Sweden or abroad, also meet the specific entry requirements.</p>

Transitional provisions</h3>

Applicants with credits or qualifications from undergraduate programmes under the previous Swedish higher education system corresponding to these entry requirements are also eligible.This primarily refers to a passing grade in courses of at least 80 credits
under the previous credit system, including an independent project on both the previous advanced course level/60 credit level and the previous higher advanced course level/80 credit level, in media and communication studies.</p>

In selecting between applicants, their ability to benefit from the doctoral studies shall be taken into account. If applicants are found to have equal qualifications, preference will be given to applicants of the underrepresented sex. The term underrepresented
sex here refers to if and when the share of either female or male students enrolled on the doctoral programme in the subject amounts to less than 40 per cent.</p>
