<b>When New Nouns Get Deaccented and Given Nouns Don’t</b>

Wagner's "relative givenness" hypothesis (Wagner 2006) is tested on an

annotated corpus of German speech data. I show that nominal

deaccentuation in an [A N] (adjective-noun) combination is neither the

result of the givenness of N nor of the availability of another [A’ N]

sequence in the discourse context but results from the fact that an

alternative is either explicitly or implicitly under discussion. If no

such alternative is under discussion, given nouns receive main prominence.</pre>
