Dr Ilia Moshnikov (University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu) will give a guest lecture on Friday, June 12, from 13:15 to 14:45 in our HS 1 (Campus 7.2).

KARELIAN LANGUAGE VARIATION PAST AND PRESENT
Abstract:
In this lecture, I examine Karelian language variation from both historical and contemporary perspectives. I
begin with an overview of the Karelian language and its dialects, as well as the current sociolinguistic
situation and ongoing revitalization efforts. I then use two case studies to demonstrate Karelian language
variation and how it can be examined. The first case study focuses on participle variation in Border Karelian dialects, highlighting the role of language contact and regional diversity. In the second part, I turn to modern contexts and explore how Karelian is
used in digital environments. By looking at online data, including Karelian on Twitter/X, I illustrate how the language is moving from traditional rural settings into contemporary virtual spaces. Finally, I bring together insights on continuity and change in Karelian language use, emphasizing the importance of both historical data and new digital resources.
