Dear all,

The Center for Cognitive Science of Language at the University of Nova
Gorica would like to invite you to our next Jezik & Linguistics Colloquium,
to be held on *Thursday, November 27,* at *13:00 CET*, streaming on Zoom
(the link will be sent one day in advance).

Varvara Magomedova (University of Nova Gorica) will be presenting a talk
titled "*Structural vs probabilistic approaches to Russian gender:
markedness, case and surface form analogy*"

*The talk will be about how Russian speakers assign grammatical gender to
non-standard nouns, focusing on the interaction of morphology, semantics,
and analogy. Traditional structural models such as Distributed and Network
Morphology fail to capture gender variation, particularly when
morphological, semantic, and lexical cues conflict. We will see that
masculine gender behaves not as a default but as a “greedy” class that
generalizes beyond predictable contexts. Mixed-effects logistic
regression aka Hierarchical MaxEnt models show that surface-form similarity
and analogical relations strongly shape gender assignment, outperforming
categorical rules of markedness or declension-based predictions. I argue
that a probabilistic, analogy-driven model provides a more realistic
account of Russian gender, linking morphological theory with experimental
and computational evidence.*

We hope to see you there!

Best,

Artem Novozhilov, on behalf of the Center for the Cognitive Science of
Language
