>>ABSTRACT: Zrinka Kolaković
" From variation to theory: How compatible are empirical insights with the existing theories "

Sentence-initial constituents consisting of two or more individually stressed words typically lead to variation in clitic placement in Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian (BCS). Unsurprisingly, such sentences are subject to discrepant interpretations in both normative and theoretical literature on clitic placement in BCS (cf. Diesing et al. 2009: 61), cf. (1a–c).

(1a) ?Takvoj SE definiciji može staviti prigovor.
such REFL definition can.3PRS put.INF complaint
(1b) ?Takvoj definiciji SE može staviti prigovor.
(1c) ?Takvoj definiciji može SE staviti prigovor.
'Such a definition is subject to complaint.' (Radanović-Kocić 1988: 111)

In the first part of the talk, a detailed corpus analysis of over 3,800 sentences written in standard Croatian will be presented. The focus will be on the results of a multinomial regression analysis identifying factors that influence the choice of one clitic placement over another. In the second part of the talk, we will consider whether, and in what ways, empirical data can reshape existing theoretical assumptions and stimulate further investigation into the interaction of structural and pragmatic factors in clitic placement in Croatian and beyond.
