_Constructed languages in fantasy and science fiction are often crafted 
to sound beautiful, harsh, evil or good -- but how universal are these 
impressions? Building on earlier work showing that German listeners 
largely perceive conlangs as intended, even when spoken neutrally, we 
extend this question across native languages. In a large multilingual 
experiment, listeners from 14 typologically diverse language backgrounds 
rated 56 stimuli from 14 well-known conlangs on scales of pleasantness, 
goodness, and peacefulness. __Our results reveal a divide between 
conlangs that exploit near-universal phonaesthetic cues (such as 
Klingon) and those whose effects depend strongly on listeners' native 
languages, offering new insights into the phonetic and phonological 
foundations of sound symbolism._
