" Slovenian Expressive Suffixes: Variation in the Place and Manner of Attachment "

I will present a study that I conducted with Karin Kavčič on typological division of Slovenian expressive suffixes based on their formal properties. The research is couched in the theoretical framework of Distributed Morphology (Halle & Marantz 1993, Marantz 1997, and subsequent work). Our goal is to provide a systematic classification of Slovenian expressive morphology associated with positive attitude and its place in a crosslinguistic comparison related to the proposal by Olga Steriopolo and her collaborators (Steriopolo 2008, 2009, 2015, 2016, Steriopolo, Markopoulos and Spyropoulos 2021). These papers analyse Russian, German, Spanish and Greek expressive morphology and propose a specific typology regarding the place (root or n P) and manner (head or modifier) of attachment of expressive suffixes. Examining Slovenian data, we show that Slovenian can be described using categories proposed in Steriopolo’s work, but with very little regularity when it comes to mapping expressive meaning to the form.
