Title & abstract:

Concessive readings with 'also' and 'only' in Hungarian

In certain environments, the Hungarian focus particles „is“ 'also' and 
„csak“ 'only', are felicitous outside of their designated positions, the 
Quantifier position and the Focus position respectively. In these cases, 
these particles do not have their typical readings, as in „is“ `also' is 
not additive and „csak“ `only' is not exclusive. Rather, they receive a 
concessive or minimal sufficiency reading. Moreover, the combination of 
the two can also introduce a concessive reading. The puzzle is 
understanding how the two particles with opposing meanings, result in a 
comparable, if not identical, concessive reading.
