This is a reminder that abstracts for the conference "'Youth Speech': Evolving Uses and Representations" on French-language youth speech practices, which will be held at the Institute for Romance Studies at the University of Vienna on May 16-17, 2024, are due by December 15, 2023. Conference: "'Youth Speech': Evolving Uses and Representations"

The conference "'Youth Speech': Evolving Uses and Representations" (« Le 'langage des jeunes' : évolution des usages et représentations ») that will be held at the University of Vienna May 16-17, 2024 aims to bring together researchers whose work examines French contemporary urban vernaculars from different perspectives, with a special focus on the evolution of these linguistic and social phenomena. Theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches will provide valuable insight to the study of these language practices.

*      Françoise Gadet (Université Paris Nanterre): « Les parlers jeunes n'existent pas »
*      Daniel McAuley (Queen's University Belfast): "The social meaning of 'le langage des jeunes': representations across users, listeners and media"
*      Cyril Trimaille (Université Grenoble Alpes): « Décrire et comprendre les dynamiques sociolinguistiques dans les pratiques langagières juvéniles : pluralité d'approches, pluralité d'apports »
*      Zsuzsanna Fagyal (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign): "Urban youth vernaculars and the social-indexical meaning of coronal plosive realizations: a Francophone perspective"


We invite abstract submissions in French or English for 20-minute presentations (followed by a 10-minute Q&A).
