Philosophy of Language Research group:

On Thursday, 30 January 2020, 13.15 –14.45h in Room 3A (3rd floor NIG, Universitätsstr 7),

Mark Bowker (University College Dublin)

will give a talk on:

Sterken on Generics

Abstract: Rachel Sterken argues that generics are context-sensitive and that their context-sensitivity should be given a distinctive semantic explanation, leading her to posit an unpronounced indexical quantifier. I argue that Sterken fails to show that the context-sensitivity is semantic and present an alternative: that context-sensitivity arises from pragmatic completion of an incomplete logical form.

All welcome.
