Best wishes

Abstract

This talk reports an empirical investigation of the acoustic realization of Noun/Verb homophones in English. The main question being addressed is whether phonetic differences are solely the product of different sentence positions nouns and verbs occur in or may be a property of the words themselves. An analysis of spontaneous speech from the Buckeye corpus suggests that differences in acoustic realization are mainly caused by syntax-induced prosodic differences but are also partly due to lexical properties. This result has implications for the representation of these word pairs in the mental lexicon and lends support to models assuming separate representations of Noun/Verb homophones. An outlook is given on reading experiments currently conducted to further explore these questions.
