[PLing] Minikurse bei der Sprachwissenschaft

In der Allgemeinen Sprachwissenschaft gibt es in den kommenden Wochen 
einige Minikurse von internationalen ForscherInnen, die für 
fortgeschrittene Studierende interessant sein könnten. Die Kurse bieten 
Gelegenheit, einen kurzen aber tiefen Blick auf ein aktuelles 
Forschungsthema zu werfen, vermittelt aus erster Hand.

Die Kurse sind für alle Interessierten offen. Bitte nicht von den langen 
Zeiten abschrecken lassen, die wirkliche Sitzunglänge wird erst in der 
ersten Sitzung festgelegt.

Inhalt:
Recent research in experimental pragmatics has highlighted the 
importance of understanding the interaction of grammatical mechanisms 
with experience-based knowledge. This course will survey some recent 
experimental studies that touch on this issue in attempting to 
distinguish between accounts of context-dependent meaning. We will focus 
on two main areas: scalar implicatures and vagueness/(im)precision. By 
pulling together studies from different theoretical and methodological 
approaches, we will try to determine to what extent interactions among 
grammatical mechanisms, utterance context, and individual experience are 
systematic.

Inhalt:
This course will examine the syntax and semantics of embedding and 
relativization, with a focus on a case study of pseudo-relative 
constructions (Radford 1975, Cinque 1995). We will begin the course with 
some background reading and lectures on small clauses, gerund 
complements and (reduced) relatives, with an emphasis on questions about 
raising of the subject and tense/aspect reduction. Then we’ll move on to 
a detailed investigation of pseudo-relative constructions in Romance, 
with a focus on these same questions. Readings will be assigned to 
accompany the lectures.

We will address a number of puzzles regarding the interpretation of 
plural expressions, pertaining to the following domains, among others:
- The multiplicity inference of plural indefinites and its disappearance 
in some contexts
- Dependent plurals and cumulativity
- Maximality effects with modified numerals
- Homogeneity inferences and non-maximality
