"Hittite stops: Spelling, phonology and etymology"

Zeit: Dienstag, 20. Mai 2014, 18 Uhr c. t. Ort:	Sensengasse 3a, Hörsaal 1 (1. Stock)

The phonological interpretation of Hittite is difficult since the cuneiform script that was used to
write it in does not seem to be able to note down detailed phonetic distinctions. In this
talk, recent insights into the spelling of consonants in Hittite will be discussed, as well as what
consequences these have for our interpretation of the Hittite consonantal system. It will be
argued that much more detail is hidden in the cuneiform signs than previously thought, and
that Hittite provides several decisive pieces of information in the debate on the recon-
struction of the stop system of Proto-Indo-European.
