Just to let you know - I've exchanged private mails with Jeff, and he 
"fixed" the problem by dumping his local version of wget and installing 
SUNWwgetr/SUNWwgetu on all Solaris boxes. So he's using 
/usr/sfw/bin/wget now, and everything works.
