Correct - thanks! I've fixed both the option and the naming of the mount 
point. This sequence should work:

   lumount BE_name
   pca --root=/.alt.BE_name --install
   luumount BE_name

Yes, that's fine, and actually one of the big advantages of using LU for 
patching. I'm sure it's mentioned in some Sun (or must I say Oracle now) 
document somewhere, maybe in:

BTW - this blog entry recommends using luupgrade instead of pca (or 
patchadd) to install patches. IMHO you can ignore that advice. At the 
end, both pca and luupgrade use "patchadd -R" to i nstall the patches, 
and no problems have been reported.
