For alternate BE, I've used option -R of pca, which is the same as for
patchadd.
Ie:
./pca -l m -R /alt.BE
So far, no problem with that. I haven't tried yet on a ZFS root, but I
don't see why it would be different.
Actually, I'm assuming that patchadd is intelligent enough to block me
from doing it if somehow that action isn't supposed to work.
